What Exactly is Website Flipping?

By Travis Van Slooten

If you have been looking for opportunities to make money online, you may have come across a business called website flipping. It may sound intimidating at first, especially if you don't have a lot of experience working with web pages. But you don't have to know how to build a website in order to be a flipper. Just like with working in physical real estate, you don't need to know how to build a house in order to buy and sell one.

The first step in website flipping is to determine what kind of flipper you want to be. There are short-term website flippers who work with low cost, low risk sites. Rather than build an extensive site and sell it, a short-term flipper would buy a new or poor performing site and turn it around for a small profit. The benefit of this kind of business is that you can work in more volume. If you're more interested in selling some top sites, you should consider long-term flipping. This means buying a hot domain name and turning it into something really special. You could be looking at buying and selling sites worth tens of thousands of dollars. While it might be a bit too risky for initial flippers, it is a great option for more experienced people. While it can mean holding onto a site for a long period of time and really investing some work in it, the profit can be substantial.

The actual business of flipping the site is pretty simple. You can buy different kinds of websites for different reasons and turn them into something profitable that someone wants to buy. Some websites are poor performers due to out of date keyword optimization or unoriginal content. These problems can be fixed easily. Some sites have great content and potential and they just need to be built upon. Regardless of the kind of website or what needs to be done, fixing these sites up so they can sell is simple enough to do for anyone with a little motivation and desire.

It may be hard to see at first why website flipping is so profitable, but it's much easier when you break it down. As an example, let's say you buy your first site for a small amount of money. The site is performing poorly, but the domain name is in demand. You research search engine optimization and build the content so that it ranks higher on Google's algorithm. You use article marketing to draw in related traffic and you include some AdSense advertisements on the site. The higher ranking and traffic builds site value for buyers and the monthly income from the AdSense program are an even bigger draw. After only a week of work, you can turn your site around for three times its original value. You can use part of that revenue to buy another site and put the rest in the bank.

There is no business which guarantees success and you will want to make sure you build your knowledge base before jumping into the deep end. Learn about what makes blogs valuable and what keywords are in demand. Find the virtual real estate sites that work best for you and put yourself in the best possible position to succeed. Website flipping is wonderful because of its versatility, but the fact that it makes as much money as you're willing to work for makes it appealing to almost everyone.
