The Importance of Your Domain Name For Your Online Business and Internet Marketing

Are you taking your conventional business online or are you thinking of marketing online, that is without the bricks and mortars just working from home? You have no idea of what the INTERNET is? Yes, I know, you know your PC very well, you can surf ok and get your email and excellent with all that but when it comes to having your own website, it's something that you cannot visualise, am I right? You know what I mean, where is it? How do you set it up? OK, I understand. I too was like you. But I found out how to do this and now I am giving seminars on the subject as well as internet marketing.

What you must do. First, register a domain name. No just any domain name or your company name (with exceptions). If you are in the business of say, manufacturing gardening tools, you don't want a domain name like 'peterneilandpartners.co.uk' (Peter Neil And Partners) Great name for a corporate image, no good for the search engines. A domain name like 'gardening-tools. co.uk' is awesome. Straight away the domain name has already told the search engines that you deal with gardening tools. 'peterneilandpartners. co.uk' told the search engines nothing. In fact, it doesn't tell us anything either! Get my drift?

Check out the competition for that domain name, not just to see if it's taken. Your domain name will be part of the keywords that you will use as 'bait' for the search engines. Search engines like Google, the worlds No.1 love content and relevance. So, a RELEVANT domain name with RELEVANT keywords AND Description in the META tags. These tags should also demonstrate that it is related to the body text of your page. Next, get a good host to host your website. I would recommend HostGator in the USA. They are VERY very reasonable and the cPanel is FAB!

By the way. You should also host with a UK host if your domain is.co.uk and likewise.com should host with a US host. why? Well, search engines move in mysterious ways and they will think that just because you have hosting in the US your company is based in the US so the search engines will list you in the US! That's not going to do you any good if your market is local, in the UK. What a bummer!!

Ok. We have a domain name, a host. Now you must tell the domain (point to it) where your hosting company is by going into your domain cPanel and set the NAMESERVERS. It's easy to do. All the information would have been emailed to you. Once you have POINT your domain to your host, it will take 24 to 72 hours for it to resolve, become active. In the meantime you could be creating your website and getting ready to upload it using a good FTP Client/program.

Setting the FTP Client/program can be a bit tricky, just fill in the required filed. This info has already supplied to you by your host. Once the domain has resolved your website is alive. Well done!!!

Just because your website is active on the World Wide Web it doesn't mean that you will get a flood of traffic. visitors, to your site. You need to tell the search engines that you are ALIVE. Go to Google search and put 'add URL to Google' in the search box. Add your URL when the page has loaded, you're done. Go to SCRUBTHEWEB.COM to submit to other engines to let them know you're ALIVE. Use a submission program, like Dynamic Submission - fairly cheap, at the beginning of the month, every month to submit on a regular basis keeping the search engines aware of your website and the important back link.

Well done if you are still with me!

Now you can sit back and rest! Wait for the money to roll in! NO! NO! NO! It's just don't work like that! You must keep a constant check on your website's performance. Check it for ranking, if it's low, improve it by tweaking the keywords, descriptions and body text to balance the relevancy. If you're using Google Adwords, what's your conversion rate for your PPC, pay per click? Are you losing your shirt and getting nowhere fast? Well it's all frustrating and many potential online marketers are put off by the complexity of websites and internet marketing. There is no need to be perplexed anymore. I have started to talk at seminars on these areas of concern.
