By Nicolaas Maritz

Is it possible to sell a domain for $5,500,000? According to DN Journal's 2010 YTD Top 100 Sales Chart: Slots.com sold for $5,500,000, Dating.com for $1,750,000 and Photo.com for $1,250,000. Shorter domain names have higher values. You will not be able to get a two or three letter dot-com domain name but if you are lucky, you might be able to find one that has expired. There is an opportunity in buying and selling domain names in the online world; it is called domain flipping. It is a process of buying names at a low price and selling it later at a higher price. Buying and selling web domains is a great way to earn extra money online. There are three main ways to get names: (1) register a never-owned domain name (2) buy up an expired domain name or (3) buy a domain name from another party.

For investment purposes, the cheapest and easiest way to is to register a name that is currently available. Some investors make good money from domain flipping, it must be short and keyword related, relevant and memorable. If it is short and memorable it cannot be forgotten. It is a good idea to research emerging business trends and then to register domains ahead of the technology curve. Avoid registering anything that has a trademarked name as part of the domain name. Don't register anything with "Microsoft" as part of the name. "Google" is a more common word, but still, be careful. There are many websites where people discuss the latest trends or interest. It is a great resource if you are looking for a specific trend. Some social websites have Top Ten searches that show you what people are interested in and reading about. Another way to determine what might make a good domain name; find out what people are searching for on the web.

You can do this using the most top keyword searches. This step should be done after investigating at what other people are buying online and the trends being talked about on the Internet. After the initial research period you can still think up your own. Or, maybe you have an inside scoop on a new trend. Watching celebrities and what makes the news is a creative way to spot trends and figure out some great domain names. Just be careful not to tread too strongly on any name brands that are protected under trademark law.

A great resource for new ideas is the news media. One can get up to the minute news on global events that are of interest to everyone. Research new products on the market and what experts foresee to be the business trends in the future. This can all be valuable information for domain names that might be valuable in the future.

What is the best domain to buy and sell?

Most sales are in the.com domain extension, although the.org and.net are starting to show some good sales in the higher price ranges. 47,420,000 domains are registered each year and 42,600,000 domains are transferred to new owners each year, which is a potential of 90 Million customers. Domain Flipping can generate profits in the 1000%-10,000% percent range. When you find a really good domain name... hold on to it. It may be tempting to quickly sell a domain for $2,000 that you only paid $10 for, but if it's a exceptional find, you may want to hold on to it for 4 years and sell it for $15,000. There will always be a market for.com domains.
